WebJun 23, 2014 · The groaning noise is usually a sign of a contaminated tow ball, or the friction pads inside the hitch head. The towball needs to be clean and shiny, no paint residues, and definitely no grease. Best to clean the towball and inside the hitch head with a clean cloth and brake cleaner, or you can use methylated spirits.
